- Biography
Terry McConnell was born in Rome, New York (his parents were students at Syracuse University at the time) and he graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1972. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Princeton in 1976, was a graduate student for two years at Stanford, and earned his Ph.D. at Illinois-Urbana in 1981, writing a dissertation under Donald Burkholder. He was a visiting lecturer at Urbana 1981-1982, and an H. C. Wang research instructor 1981-1983 and an H. C. Wang assistant professor 1983-1984 at Cornell. He then joined SU as assistant professor in 1984 and was promoted to associate professor in 1986 and to professor in 1991.
His research interests are inequalities for real and Banach-valued martingales and related results in harmonic analysis; Brownian motion and applications to harmonic and analytic functions; conditioned Brownian motion; multi-parameter ergodic theory; the heat equation; and renewal theory. He has written 22 papers and been supported by NSF grants 1982-1990. He was awarded a Sloan Foundation Fellowship 1985-1987 and was associate editor of the Annals of Probability 1991-1996.
In the Department he was a member of the Executive Committee 1990-1992, 1996-1997, and 1998-2000, and associate chair 1993-1996 and 2001- 2002.
