Graduate Financial Support

Fellowships

A fixed number of University Fellows are selected annually by the Graduate School from a pool of entering candidates who have been nominated by their department. Fellows receive a stipend of $19,570 for the academic year (2006-2007) together with a tuition scholarship for 30 academic credits per year. The Mathematics Department may suppliment this stipend on an individual basis. These fellowships are usually a four-year package: the University Fellow has no required teaching duties during the first and fourth years of graduate study and is guarenteed a teaching assistantship during the second and third years as long as the student continues to make satisfactory progress toward a degree in his/her major department.

To be considered for a University Fellowship, one must have one's complete application sent to Graduate Admissions by the second week of January. A small number of one-year fellowships are also available to graduate students in their final year of completing the doctoral dissertation.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Graduate teaching assistantships in the Mathematics Department (for those who, on the basis of their spoken english, have been cleared to teach) carry a stipend (2007-2008) ranging in increments from $15,780 - $17,134 for the academic year, the latter amount being for those assistants who have passed the Qualifying Examination. Teaching Assistantships are accompanied by a tuition scholarship for 24 credit hours. In addition, the spouse of a teaching assistant is eligable for a tuition scholarship of 6 credits per year.

The normal obligation for teaching assistants is equivalent to one or two sections of a mathematics course per semester, (usually only one preparation), but no more than 15 hours of service per week. Teaching assistants who grade rather than teach, receive a minimum stipend of $14,322. Teaching assistantships are generally renewed each year by the Mathematics Department (with the concurrence of the Graduate School), as long as the student executes his/her teaching duties competently and continues to make satisfactory progress toward a graduate degree in Mathematics.

Command of English is an important criterion in the awarding of teaching assistantships. Complete information regarding scholarships and assistantships is contained in the Prospectus issued by the Graduate School. Assistantships are awarded on a rolling basis. There is no deadline for being considered for a teaching assistantship.

Additional summer support (in the form of teaching assistantships and/or fellowships), is usually available for continuing graduate students who have completed at least one semester of graduate study in our Mathematics Department. In summer 2006, this support averaged over $3,100 per student.

Research Assistantships
